Let’s put some ragdoll

Even if in the last post I wrote about the new GFX, we don’t want to show the progress right now.
Just a few more day, even if it could be next week.

In the meanwhile, we have another progress of EFFING DEAD to show, the ragdoll behavior on the enemies. You know: you shot to one of the infected clone and – BOOM – the magic explode and some crazy stuff happen on their bodies.
…and also a bit creepy.

A lot of comments here and there were about the animation, a bit too rigid, but we think that one major faults were the dead ones because, let’s be honest, it’s nice to see a BIG reward in “animation” when you shoot to somethings – don’t you think? 😉 The ragdoll is extreme but also funny and sure not rigid.

So… what’s going on?

The holiday are finished, it’s sept the 17th and it’s time to go back in track.
Before the relaxing weeks, we have draw some conclusions and made the point of the situation.
The indiegogo campaign didn’t go as hoped and the greenlight page didn’t help that much and was disappointing. We tried to reach as many videogames sites as possible with the beta but people didn’t give us the attention we hoped and the word didn’t spread out much.
The good part of it is that we had a lot of youtubers that seems to like EFFING DEAD and we read comments, bad and good, and thought, thought, thought and thought again about our work and stuff. And people opinions.

We had a silent july/august because we were a bit tired and, most of all, we were not happy with the result of EFFING DEAD impact. We know that reach people is hard and to be likeable is even tougher but, you know, sometimes you hope for more 🙂
Maybe we need something stronger to show…

On july we asked ourselves about the gameplay weakness, about new ideas for making EFFING DEAD better and more easy to understand – in simple words, nicer. Alessio showed me months ago a new shader that I found interesting and “recently” he told me it could be a good think to use it. His point was that it could boost our developing time (too slow) and, most of all, with less 3D  work it could make the game even nicer and richer. It’s start with a shader change and goes on with a restyle of everything we are not satisfied.

The milestone now is to make the game more colorful and sure more less realistic but with much more style. We had a great light system but the main problem was (and is) that with this type of approach, the game seems to trying  to be similar to an AAA game (oh, God no…) and it cost more time on modelling and texturing. The new shader changes this.

We are also making a new game beginning with a more complex situation (even if in the “old” version there was this “background” piece) with changes on the “tutorial”, a new playable character (only one? Maybe two? three? -_^ ), and a other stuff we hope to show soon.

On the gameplay side we are trying to start the game with a more personal approach  – it still remains our survival in RE4 style, as we like and enjoy sooo much, but with something totally different: I think we have a new game hook, something that people could really enjoy and that, maybe, can create a better relation with the player and game emotions and feelings.

It’s funny, even also a bit disappointing, many people compare EFFING DEAD with DEAD SPACE (which I have played for more or less 23 hours  and it sure isn’t) maybe because it’s “space” but when they play it and find out that the gameplay is different, they complain it’s not DEAD SPACE.
But I’m sure that with the new version people will stop with the DEAD SPACE debate 😛
…we are also thinking about a new name for EFFING DEAD because so many thing are evolving so, maybe, it’s reasonable to call it with a new name. But that is not sure for now, we will see.

The Press is moving (and maybe is playing)

Hi guys, at last more and more youtubers are answering our calls ^_^ and we will have soon some new Let’sPlay video – we really love that.
But last weeks also the press started to write news about us.

First of all we had an article on the cool Italian site GIOCOINDIE. Tks to Marco Weirdreams, a really nice guys. Go and read the site -_^

..IGN italy and also OUTCAST wrote some news about us, at the begin. Hope to see more there 😉

The first not Italian site that show info about EFFING DEAD was the INDIEGAMEBLOGS which was impressed by the barrel rolls 😛 «The info page tells us that the game is all about headshots, energy blades, pushing buttons and barrel rolls! Ok we might have left a few things out but admit it, you’re excited now

Then EFFING DEAD was also on GAMESPARKED with some nice comments about the V-Blade: «Possibly my favourite part of what I played was the V-blade, a melee attack that absolutely destroys any dazed enemies ».

REGRETZERO wrote some really nice words about EFFING DEAD on its Screenshot Saturday Roundup: «Everything about this game so far is looking incredibly neat. Its story is really interesting and engaging, plus it has a good art style and reasonably good graphical fidelity. I’m really excited to see where this game is when they release the final product. Assuming you’re as interested and excited as I am, you can keep up with development of Effing Dead by[…] »

On the INDIEGAME MAGAZINE we was first on the trailer thursday june 6th results 13 new indie game trailers and then EFFING DEAD has a BETA news tks to  Sam Adonis: «The whole game is really looking great, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it from Short and Tall Games.» wrote an article on IndieGameMagazine here

Last but not least, from France the nice Skywilly wrote a preview on GAMESIDESTORY.

BETA update – version 0.8.8

We have a new BETA this time with:

  • mouse invert checks, in X and Y on MOVING and SHOOTING (in the CONTROLS panel, after pressing ESC while playing)
  • camera update during the aiming 

We saw some guys have issues with the camera while shooting and others (not many, really, but still very important..) ask for the mouse invert so here it is.
